Are Tennis Lessons really helpful?

tennis lessons
Shiner10 asked:

Alright time for a little more information. I’ am a sophmore in highschool and play on the team. I’ve only been playing for about 3 months and I practice 5-6 days a week. I’ve played in 3 Varsity tournaments and I’m playing in JV for district. I’ve know of a few team mates who have taken lessons and have heard mix reviews. I’ve noticed my game is always improving but I’m interested in sharpening my skills. I would really just like to know if they are worth the cost for one lesson a week and if they would be truly helpful. Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks,
Colt
Thanks for the replies. I’ve got no intentions of playing pro, but sense I’m playing competitivley I’m sure you can understand my desire to improve my chances in winning. Is a single one hour lesson a week enough to benefit from? Also do you guy’s know if tennis camps are beneficial? A local college in my town is offering a Tennis Camp for four days, 3hrs a day, price is 120$.

It depends if you are trying to become a professional or not. If you are playing casually, yes they can be useful. But if you want to turn pro, your talent levels are more important. An average player cannot be turned into a great, no matter how much they practice or how good their coach is.

IMO the best way to get better at tennis is to play a lot of matches. You may hit well in practice, but the true test is playing under pressure. Even if you get beaten a lot at the start, you will improve rapidly. So enter some tournaments, challenge your friends etc. Coaching can help you improve a few minor things, but honestly I don’t think it helps that much at an amateur level.

How could anybody give “mixed reviews” about private lessons?

THEY ARE THE BEST WAY TO IMPROVE YOUR GAME, hands down.

Sure, playing lots of matches and such can help, but lessons will help you develop your game further. Even if your form seems solid, your coach might notice some little things you could correct and make yourself even better. You’ll also learn some additional strategies that can help you. The drills you do will force you into situations where you aren’t so comfortable, so you know what to do if you find yourself in a similar place during a match.

So basically, if you/your family can afford it, definitely take some lessons, no questions.

From a guy who has had many lessons…
yes they are the most beneficial and vital steps to becoming a good player. Especially if you plan on winning tournaments or playing at college level. Last year I was a freshman and made varsity easy at the #4 spot in a good school, proof that lessons work :D . And let me just say, in high school tennis private lessons makes the difference between winning and losing lol. Everything just gets so much better that way. you whole game improves really fast and you learn more and more. I recommend asking around for the best coach there is in your town and contact him! Just make sure you take what you get out of the lessons to heart and go out and practice them. Otherwise your just wasting your time and energy.
    Good luck
