You can get better with lessons or with out lessons. It does not matter. As long as you have the right technique you can become good. But rarely do people who dont take lessons get better than average. Thats because they may not know the proper technique, footwork, stroke production, ect. Tennis lessons help players get from a normal level to a higher level. By taking tennis lessons you will learn proper techinique, foot work, match play needed to become a serious competetor. PRicate lessons help even more becuase coaches attention is 100 percent on you and you can get better faster. I suggest that you take lessons. It be beyond difficult to be an advance player with out coaching. Go to your local tennis club/center and take lessons. The best are private if you want to become an advance player and tournament player. If you want to get just above average get group but stick with private.
if you never play before of course that you need tennis lessons. if you have several years experience (approximate minimum 5 years) with coach you can work alone.
If you are first starting off you should take lessons to get the right technique because if you don’t have a good technique you will create bad habits, and will become really inconsistent. Once you have the technique down then you can play without having lessons.
lessons are definitely important. If you want to be an average player, its fine not to have one, but if you want to be better than average, its almost impossible to get there without proper teaching from an experienced professional. For me to get to a competitive college level, I had to practice about 6-8 hours a day, 5-6 hours a week with my coach, and had to do physical training for another two hours. Its not exactly a piece of cake getting to an advanced level, but with commitment, hard work and a good coach you can get there.
Good Luck
