don’t you just love shira? asked:
hey, i’ve decided to take tennis lessons for the first time.
and i need some tips from you on being an overall good player.
please dont say that they’ll teach me how to play there, cause i just wanna know some things so that i wont look like a complete idiot while i’m playing. so lol, what’re your tips? thank youuu. oh. and if you make a list of things, you’re more likely to get best answer. =)

Serve – remember to hit up and ‘snap’ your wrist when you make contact with the ball. Place ball in centre of racquet throat before serving.
Forehand – Stand side on, step and hit the ball, remember to hold your hand out as if you were following the ball.
Backhand – Two hands is more controlled, watch the ball and keep racquet head facing slightly down.
Volley – Hit and step
Remember after hitting the ball get back into the ‘ready’ position
run – diagonally to the ball.
Remember to call out the score and clearly call ‘out’ when the ball is ‘out’
Look at some lessons on youtube.
I hope i helped
Good luck
From your local public library get a video or DVD titles like “How to play tennis” or “Basics of Tennis”. I did that about 4 years back and it helped me a lot. That cassette is my coach. I must have watched that cassette at least 10 times and certain sections especially like “one handed backhand” at least 20 times.
Visual learning makes it more interesting.
OK.I know this isnt a long answer, but heres my best tip-Always play someone better than you, because it wont just challenge you,It’ll make you better.Have fun playing!:~)
Here is my (really long) advice:
1) Before going to your first lesson, take a basket of balls and a racket, go out to a public court, and just hit some balls, with or without a partner. Make sure you take a look at some basic grips first…here’s a good place to learn about them:
Also, familiarize yourself with the court. Make sure you know the difference between a singles court and a doubles court, and what the lines and boxes are called.
2) When you hit forehands, you should do whatever feels comfortable. People tend not to be too picky about forehands and how they are hit, so everyone usually has their own style. When hitting backhands, use a two-handed. It looks really cool to be able to hit a one-handed, but believe me, until you know how to do it, and are ready to do it, you will look like a fool attempting it.
3) For serves, make sure you are positioning yourself correctly. You should be just behind the baseline, with your left foot parallel to the line, and your right foot slightly behind it, and turned out a little. This will be the opposite if you are a lefty. Toss the ball high, and straight up, slightly out in front of you. Make contact with the ball at the highest point your racket can reach. Serve into the service box on the opposite side of the court. A good way to make sure you are doing all of this right, is to video-tape your serve, play it in slow motion, and pick it apart to see what you are doing wrong. It is also helpful to watch professionals serve.
4) Volleys and overheads can be extremely helpful shots in tennis, if you are doing them correctly. Volleys should be hit when you are just about in the middle of the service box. Use a continental grip, or a semi-western if that’s more comfortable, although eventually you will have to switch to a continental. Step through the ball, and most importantly, do not swing. Think of it as holding your racket in the same place, and your swing is in you stepping through the ball. Do not take the racket face down. If the ball is low, bend your knees. Remember to step with the opposite foot as the hand you are hitting with.
Overheads are hit the same as serves, except usually you have to run back to them. Run sideways (don’t turn around), and keep your hand (the one the racket isn’t in) pointed at the ball until you swing. Keep your eyes on the ball at all times.
5) Learn the rules of the game. Learn what is in and what is out: lines are always in, and if you are unsure whether something is in or out, it is always in. You won’t have other people calling your lines in matches for a long time, so learn to make good calls. Learn how the score works as well, and watch a lot of matches, if you don’t already.
6) Enjoy yourself! Tennis is a great sport, and it can be one of the best feelings in the world to win, or even just to hit a great shot. Have fun with it, don’t worry too much about trying to impress people, and don’t get discouraged. It is a really rewarding sport, so stay patient, and have a great time out there!
