Is it worth taking private tennis lessons?

tennis lessons
Sterling asked:

Hi,
Ok i had my first tennis lesson like last week and i have never done it before i am 16 and do pick up things easy. However i found that the instructor was not telling me 2 do anything different so i just thought well im either doing good or he is ignoring me. Anyway later in the lesson i was playing a shot and there was 2 other coachs at the side of the court watching me and i could hear them say “cor look at him he is brillient and its his first time ever”
Do you think it is worth taking up private lessons with my club and are they more effective than group situations.

Private lessons cost heaps. They do help a bit but i’ve never had a lesson in my life, i’m 15 and i’m in division 5.

Playing in a group is a great way to socialise and make friends however, if you dont think that you are actually improving or learning anything the I would consider private lessons.

Ha Ha .. lessons are better than group lessons or just hitting with a group. This is what you do to make sure that your money spent on lessons is going to pay off. You have to go watch different coaches teach and see how they work with people. Some are very friendly and explain things in great detail, some are more about being aggressive and talk with a raised voice. Some only are their to get paid and will only show a few things at a time. So you have to observe different coaches and see who is a good fit for you.. and more importantly who is really their to help people learn and is not just their for some quick money . Also when the player is done ask them how that coach was.
If you dont want to spend the time doing this and I realize your only 16 but still you need to speak up and tell him that you want to learn a specific thing. Make a list and show him what you want to learn. To many young people don’t know how to speak up and sometimes older people will take advantage of that. I prommise you when you speak up you will get the respect and he will be showing you something new :)
    peace Eldon…

It depends on you. I f you think your instructor is giving you good insight on improving your game, then stay with him. But if he’s not really teaching you something new or helping you improve your overall game, then look for another coach! Maybe those two coaches can help you improve more. But before you hire a coach make sure you check their credentials. Also I would make an outline on what you need to work on. And lastly, make sure you get along with this new coach. Make sure your personalities mesh well. I think this is key!! Good Luck!!

Tennis lessons are the absolute best way to develop your game. Hands down. Sure, it’s best to supplement that with some match/tournament play, but the lessons are where you really learn stuff.

As far as comparing them to group lessons, they are much better. All the instructor’s attention is on you, rather than being divided amongst several others. When it’s just you and the instructor, he can take as much time as he wants to make adjustments to your form. And all the drills will be chosen to help improve your game. Group lessons are more fun, but sometimes you’ll do drills that won’t help you as much. Like if you already have a really strong backhand, but others in the group don’t, you won’t benefit as much from the time spent on that drill as you would some other drill that you could be doing in a private lesson.

Just be prepared for a high intensity level. You’ll be pushed to your limits physically, no matter how in shape you might be. But it will be completely worth it. And if you want to, you can still take a group clinic. I always took private lessons and a group clinic, because the group clinic is more laid back/fun. And you can never play too much tennis.
